Prenatal Management of Spina Bifida Aperta symposium

Just concluded an enriching session at the “Prenatal Management of Spina Bifida Aperta symposium”, organised by the colleagues of Leuven!

Spina Bifida Aperta is a complex neural tube defect that occurs during fetal development, where the spinal cord and spine do not close properly. This condition exposes a portion of the spinal cord and its surrounding structures, often leading to neurological complications including motor and sensory deficits, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and hydrocephalus.

While prevention is important, the symposium placed a special focus on the remarkable progress made in the field of neurosurgery. From in-utero surgeries to postnatal interventions, the strides taken in this area are awe-inspiring. Early diagnosis remains a pivotal point in the management of Spina Bifida Aperta. Detecting the condition allows for timely neurosurgical interventions, enabling healthcare providers to plan personalized treatment strategies.

Let’s ensure that families and healthcare providers are equipped with the latest information to make informed decisions for the little ones in their care!
